Just like all previous events, it was a fantastic night. The event took place at the beautiful Rauschenberg Gallery Space in Chelsea. With scientists in the first row, artists in the second, the night began with two featured dates. The second pair featured Jennifer Monson , an artistic director, choreographer and performer, dating Shahid Naeem , a professor of ecology and evolution at Columbia University. Eli Kintisch , a writer for Science Magazine, moderated. Eli Kintisch talking with our featured daters. Why almost all scientists believe in evolution: It is impossible to prove that the theory of evolution is absolutely true. The theory maintains that plant evolution, animal evolution and the major geological changes to the earth unfolded over billions of years. Thus, the full theory cannot be demonstrated in the laboratory. Processes like the rise of mountains and erosion are simply too slow to be observed during one person’s lifetime. Elements of the theory e.
But nobody was on hand to observe what the world and its life forms looked like hundreds of millions of years ago. However, sufficient evidence exists in support of evolution to convince Evolution is the key unifying theory that unifies many different branches of science, from cosmology to biology. Why almost all conservative Protestants believe in creation science: Their acceptance in creation science is based mainly on two fundamental beliefs: One of the most fundamental assumptions held by conservative Protestants is that the Bible was inspired by God and thus is without error , as originally written.

What’s in a Name? Whether referred to as “global warming” or “climate change,” the consequences of the widescale changes currently being observed in Earth’s climate system could be considerable. The Internet is full of references to global warming. The Union of Concerned Scientists website on climate change is titled “Global Warming,” just one of many examples.
But we don’t use global warming much on this website.
Now, a scientist believes he may have finally solved the mystery surrounding the Bermuda Triangle. Karl Kruszelnicki says the mystery is no more, and human error most likely caused the incidents. The Area of Sea referred to as the Bermuda Triangle is one of the most heavily transited shipping lanes on the entire planet as many vessels cross the region in order to arrive at different ports in America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
One of the most notorious cases of the Bermuda Triangle occurred in when the USS Cyclops—a ship carrying people disappeared and was never seen again. All five planes vanished together with fourteen crew members. Following their disappearance, a Martin Mariner rescue plane with 13 crew-members was deployed to search for the aircraft, but it also vanished never to be heard or seen again.
Never have experts found any traces of the missing ships. In fact, nearly all aerial or maritime vehicles that disappeared in the area were never seen or heard from again.

Chemistry yrs Interactive, Learning Pod 3 How do we know how old a fossil is? We use carbon, as every living being has carbon. Carbon dating, also known as radiocarbon dating, is a method of estimating the age of carbon-bearing materials up to 60, years old. One of the most frequent uses of radiocarbon dating is to estimate the age of organic remains from archaeological sites.
January Fossils provide a record of the history of life. Smith is known as the Father of English Geology. Our understanding of the shape and pattern of the history of life depends on the accuracy of fossils and dating methods. Some critics, particularly religious fundamentalists, argue that neither fossils nor dating can be trusted, and that their interpretations are better. Other critics, perhaps more familiar with the data, question certain aspects of the quality of the fossil record and of its dating.
These skeptics do not provide scientific evidence for their views.

Can you observe evolution happening? Because for many species, humans included, evolution happens over the course of many thousands of years, it is rare to observe the process in a human lifetime. Usually only laboratory scientists studying quickly reproducing life forms, like single-celled creatures and some invertebrates, have the opportunity to see evolutionary change happen before their eyes. All of us can and do experience the indirect effects of evolution nearly every day, however.
One of the more important evolutionary concerns facing humans today is the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbes.

Fossil Record As geologists continued to reconstruct the Earth’s geologic history in the s and early s, they quickly recognized that the distribution of fossils within this history was not random — fossils occurred in a consistent order. This was true at a regional, and even a global scale. Furthermore, fossil organisms were more unique than rock types, and much more varied, offering the potential for a much more precise subdivision of the stratigraphy and events within it.
The recognition of the utility of fossils for more precise “relative dating” is often attributed to William Smith, a canal engineer who observed the fossil succession while digging through the rocks of southern England. But scientists like Albert Oppel hit upon the same principles at about about the same time or earlier. In Smith’s case, by using empirical observations of the fossil succession, he was able to propose a fine subdivision of the rocks and map out the formations of southern England in one of the earliest geological maps

The prospect of dating a scientist for most people does not conjure up highly thrilling date evenings. And yet scientists are intelligent, curious and most often undemanding, qualities which are important for a mutually satisfying relationship.

History of science Science in a broad sense existed before the modern era and in many historical civilizations. In particular, it was the type of knowledge which people can communicate to each other and share. For example, knowledge about the working of natural things was gathered long before recorded history and led to the development of complex abstract thought. This is shown by the construction of complex calendars, techniques for making poisonous plants edible, public works at national scale, such as those which harnessed the floodplain of the Yangtse with reservoirs, dams, and dikes, and buildings such as the Pyramids.

Olin, Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education, undertook a detailed scientific study of the parchment. The scientists traveled to Yale, where they were allowed to trim a 3-inch-long sliver off the bottom edge of the parchment for analysis. Some initial work found anatase, a particular form of titanium dioxide, in the ink.
Since anatase only went into commercial production in the 20th century, some concluded that the ink was also a 20th-century product, making the map a forgery. Recent testing, however, only revealed trace quantities of titanium, whose presence may be a result of contamination, the chemical deterioration of the ink over the centuries, or may even have been present naturally in the ink used in medieval times. Another recent study detected carbon, which has also been presented as evidence of a forgery.
